About Us

Chef Kurt Wagner's road to becoming a Master Chef started in a small farming village in western Germany. In his early teens, he set off as an apprentice and within four years had reached his goal learning as much as possible in as many places as possible.

In September 1982 Kurt relocated to Canada with his family and ran a popular diner in Wawanesa. Over the years this simple diner turned into the fine establishment that rapidly garnered favourable attention as well as the 1988 Gold Medal for fine dining from the Manitoba Restaurant Association.

In 1995, Kurt and Rita opened Gasthaus Gutenberger in Winnipeg. The Gasthaus menu predominantly consists of authentic german cuisine that include mouth watering rinderroulden, tender schnitzel, oven roasted pork hocks, home-made bratwurst, spätzle to name a few. Also featured on the menu are continental dishes such as Steaks, Chicken Cordon Swiss and Vegetable Wellington.

Chef Wagner explains, “Everything we feature is authentic, but I also have items that cater to our guests with different tastes.” And because of this versatility, his restaurant has attracted a wide and appreciative audience.

Chef Kurt Wagner’s favourite dish…..

“My personal favorite?” he’ll say, “I still love Schnitzel,” True to his roots like every German, Schnitzel is something no German can get tired of
